"Our Dash"

Our Dash

On a tombstone, we may notice the date someone was born and the date they passed away.
Between those two dates is a small dash. Most people don’t think about the small dash on a tombstone, but it represents their entire life. Everything that person experienced is represented by one little dash. That little dash is so small yet so significant.
We spend most of our days planning for tomorrow, worrying about what will happen tomorrow, or working toward goals. We are so involved in our daily responsibilities that sometimes we forget how precious our time here on earth is.
Psalm 90:12 reminds us to be mindful of each day that God has blessed us with and to live each day with wisdom. No one knows how many days they have left. However, we do have a choice in how we spend each moment.
When our day comes, what will people remember about us? Will they remember the nice house we had or the money we made? Or will they remember how we treated them and maybe the difference we made in their lives?
This is why legacy is so meaningful.
We can leave behind something greater than material possessions. We can leave behind a legacy of kindness, love, and faith.
We cannot change yesterday, and tomorrow is not promised. But we do have a choice in how we live today. It is important to spend more time investing in the people God has placed in our lives.
Reflection
If your dash were complete today, how would you be remembered? Would people remember your kindness, your faith, your willingness to help others, and the love you shared?
Psalm 90:12
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of life. Forgive me for the times I have been so busy in life that I forget what truly matters. Help me use my time wisely and never take the people You placed in my life for granted. Teach me to speak kind words and show compassion to others. Teach me to forgive and to love more deeply. When my time on earth is over, I pray the life I have lived has made a difference and that the legacy I leave behind reflects Your goodness.
In Your precious name, Amen.
